Why Live in Juniata

Juniata is a historic Altoona neighborhood with roots dating back to the late 19th century. Originally established as its own city, Juniata was annexed by Altoona in 1929 as employment along the Pennsylvania Railroad declined. Despite major changes to the industry and surrounding infrastructure, the neighborhood has kept a strong sense of identity. The Juniata Locomotive Shop still operates nearby, even though major employers now include UPMC Altoona Hospital and Penn State Altoona. Along dense, gridded, hilly streets are mostly older homes from the late 1800s through the 1920s. American Foursquares are very common, but there are also split-level and bi-level homes. Homes usually sit closer to the street, creating larger backyards but less parking space. Juniata Memorial Park is the community's main greenspace, offering a spray park, playground and basketball court. The Juniata Civic Association organizes community events, including crafting nights and monthly book clubs, at the Memorial Park Pavilion. There are also many outdoor recreation options in the surrounding Allegheny Mountains, and Canoe Creek State Park offers access to trails, like the Lower Trail. Students attend public schools in the Altoona Area School District. Many people can run errands on foot, as grocery stores and restaurants are often within walking distance. Taking an Amtram bus is also an alternative to driving everywhere.
