Why Live in Chapel Hill

Chapel Hill is a rural neighborhood, 4 miles from downtown Lubbock. The area is favored for its proximity to transportation and housing prices. “It’s a little bit cheaper to live over there,” says Stephen Bearden, a broker and owner of Lubbock Discount Realty, who has been working in the industry for 20 years. “You can get older homes for less.” Most of eastern Lubbock, including Chapel Hill, was racially segregated in the early 1900s until the city ordinance was repealed in 2006. Some residents feel Interstate 27 still disconnects the eastern side from surrounding Lubbock, but Chapel Hill is one example of a community that has formed bonds and looks out for one another despite this history of division. “It’s a little neighborhood,” says Esther Robledo, a current resident and self-appointed community advocate. “We keep to ourselves, but if anyone needs help, we help them. It’s a quiet place and a nice community.” Robledo used to run a community kitchen and now collects donations for children’s homes and Chapel Hill residents.
