On the far east edge of Lubbock’s suburbs, Chatman Hill is a storied neighborhood offering lower priced homes close to downtown and outdoor attractions. The north end of the neighborhood holds residences, while the south end holds a rail yard and the largest cottonseed oil mill processing facility in the country. Most of East Lubbock was segregated during the Jim Crow era, and a period of low growth and decline for the area followed. “Chatman Hill is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Lubbock, and the city is making a conscious effort to revitalize the area,” says Realtor Tarvis Grant, a broker for TGA Realty and Property Management who’s been selling homes in the area for over 20 years. He says the Lubbock City Council is currently budgeting future investment into the area, and a new park is being planned to help better connect East Lubbock to the Depot District and downtown.
