West Lubbock neighborhood with shopping and affordable homes
Before the construction of West End Center in 2014, the land below Lubbock’s largest shopping complex was an untouched open field. Now, the 350,000 square foot complex and its dozens of shops and restaurants serves as a testament to the city’s rapid development and expansion west of Loop 289. “West End Center is one of two major shopping centers in the city of Lubbock where people will flock,” says Wilson Bowling, a neighborhood planner with the City of Lubbock. Eight miles west of downtown Lubbock and bordered by Loop 289, the neighborhood is more than just shopping with its location in the highly rated Frenship Independent School District and mix of relatively affordable homes providing options for residents.

Grade A Shopping at West End Center
Residents and shoppers can delight at West End Center being right at the forefront of Lubbock’s west-Loop economic and commercial expansion. With well-known national brands like Nike, Cabela’s and Banana Republic, the shopping center is one of Lubbock’s premiere shopping locations. Since first being developed in 2014 and in subsequent phases, the complex has welcomed numerous anchor stores and is also home to several hotels. For everyday grocery shopping, a Costco is right in the neighborhood. West End Center is home to a number of restaurants like Walk-On’s Sports Bistreaux for Louisiana seafood. World of Beer Bar & Kitchen for dozens of beers.

Ranch-style builds and contemporary townhouses
Most homes in West End were built in the 1970s through the 90s. Styles range from a mix of traditional one story ranch style builds with front lawns and mature trees to midcentury modern style architecture with angular sloping roofs and remodeled interiors. The neighborhood also has a number of newer townhouses built in the last 10 years with three bedrooms and fenced-in yards. Homes in West End are usually priced between $150,000 and $250,000 while townhouses are priced between $200,000 and $250,000. "West End townhomes are modern and clean townhome community convenient to shopping, dining, and the Loop which will get you anywhere in town. Townhouses are not overly common in that area. There are mostly older, smaller single family homes that are perfect for investors and first time home buyers," says Jennifer Busbea, Broker/Owner, Halley Road Real Estate.

Frenship Schools on the fast-track to growth
Students attend Frenship Independent School District, beginning at Westwind Elementary School and Heritage Middle School, followed by Frenship High School. All three schools are rated A-minus or better on Niche. The highest ranked district in Lubbock, Frenship Schools is growing between two and five percent annually and is set to add another four schools by the end of 2024 to address the increased demand. Premier High School is a private charter school in the neighborhood serving high school student and rated B. Lubbock Christian School is one of the oldest private schools in Lubbock offering K-12 education and rated A. Lubbock Christian University is one mile east of the neighborhood and has around 1,600 undergraduate and graduate students in more than 60 academic disciplines.
Westwind Elementary School has a student enrollment of 568.
Heritage Middle School has a total enrollment of 827 students.

Community parks west of the Loop
A few blocks from West End Center, Duran Park sits in quiet contrast to the busy shopping environment. The park features a well-maintained playground and an open field. Duran Park is named after Dr. Armando Duran, a longtime Lubbock physician and civic leader who was known for providing free medical care to thousands of Lubbock residents. A mile north, Cooke Park had a brand new playground installed in 2023 as part of a citywide strategy by the City of Lubbock to upgrade parks and recreation infrastructure. The park also has a walking path and a pavilion. One mile east across Loop 289, Hays Field at Lubbock Christian University has hosted several regional college baseball tournaments since opening its doors in 1979.

Access to downtown Lubbock
West End is 8 miles west of downtown Lubbock with access available on US-82. Bus routes are available via Citibus, but riders will have to walk close to a mile to reach the nearest stop at Genoa Avenue and 32nd Street. Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport is 13 miles north.
