Diverse living on Lisbon Avenue
Set six miles northwest of downtown, Uptown Milwaukee comprises a half-square-mile of densely packed homes, community organizations and stores. Despite its modest size, Uptown Milwaukee squeezes in a surprising amount of diversity through the residents and the businesses that serve them. "You have Wauwatosa to the west and Sherman Park to the east, which are very different areas demographically," says Uptown Crossing Executive Director Tracy Staedter. "So, you get a unique mix of people and businesses in between." This diversity and a bevy of affordable housing make Uptown Milwaukee an appealing option for professionals looking for a unique place to live not far from the heart of the city.

A community dedicated to local business
Economic success is a priority to the community in Uptown, so local options are represented next to mainstays like Wendy's and Domino's. "We have an active commercial district," says Michael Murphy, Alderman of Milwaukee's 10th District. "It's very engaged in working with the community." Tricklebee Café is a pay-what-you-can restaurant featuring soups, sandwiches and more made with locally sourced ingredients. Having served the area for over 40 years, the laid-back menu at McBob's Pub & Grill is another favorite. Residents can find groceries and necessities at the family-owned BC Supermarket just a mile east.

Outdoor fun at Marcus DeBack
After a $500,000 renovation in 2016, Marcus DeBack Playground is a point of pride with locals. With basketball courts, play areas, a zipline and fitness equipment, there’s more to it than the word “playground” usually implies. “It’s really popular over the summer,” says Alderman Murphy. “You’ve got people of all generations enjoying themselves and bonding over it.”

Close to neighbors, close to businesses
With some blocks containing dozens of houses, living space is a commodity in Uptown. Homes generally have small, grassy front lawns with back lot space for storage or parking. Bungalows, along with Arts and Crafts and ranch-style houses are typical, but visitors can also find unique outliers. Many local houses were built in the 1920s, and fixer-uppers are easily found with prices as low as the $60,000s. Duplexes begin in the mid-$100,000s, with renovated bungalows in the high $200,000s. Ubiquitous sidewalks and a grid street layout make the area easily walkable, with residential streets connecting to businesses as little as a quarter mile away.

Residents can also take a 1.5-mile trip southeast for Washington Park Wednesdays, where music and food trucks are found outside the park’s iconic bandshell.
