In the late 19th century, cash registers in Silver City rattled with silver dollars, which the local train manufacturers used to pay their employees. Hence the neighborhood's name. As the industrial might of the Menomonee Valley diminished over the next century, so did Silver City. But in recent years, the neighborhood has flourished once again as new residents breathe fresh cultural life into the community.
