Mission Viejo is an 18-square-mile city located in Orange County, California. The city is unique in that it is almost entirely comprised of a single master-planned community. The homes, from apartment buildings and condominiums to single-family houses, are designed in the Spanish Mission Style, with a stucco and adobe look. Even large companies have had to adjust their well-established, recognizable building styles to fit in with Mission Viejo’s standards of appearance.

Although the entire city was planned and built over a relatively short period of time, there are around 20 distinct neighborhoods in Mission Viejo. The City Center neighborhood, just north of the Mission Viejo Golf Course, is a suburban area containing mostly older, owner-occupied medium- to large-sized single family homes and apartment buildings. The Muirlands Boulevard/Olympus Drive neighborhood, just to the north and west of City Center, is a more densely-populated urban area with medium- to large-sized, slightly newer homes (built between 1970 and 1999). This area also has several townhomes. The Crown Valley Parkway/Marguerite Parkway area, just south of City Center, contains mostly small- to medium-sized apartments and single-family homes. Other popular Mission Viejo communities are Platino/Via Noveno, Felipe Road/Busacor and Calle Valdez/Calle Azorin. All of the neighborhoods in Mission Viejo are noted for their low crime rates, relatively quiet living and high-quality schools.

Marie Callender’s, which owns the Perkins restaurant chain, has its headquarters and corporate support center in Mission Viejo. Interstate 5 runs through the city, making commuting to nearby areas a popular option for many Mission Viejo residents. The number one employer in Mission Viejo is Mission Hospital, which had 2,443 employees in 2010. Educational organizations also employ a fair number of people in the area: Saddleback College reported employing nearly 2,000 people in 2010, and the Capistrano Valley Unified School District employed more than 1,500. Retailers, such as Macy’s, Nordstrom and Target were also major sources of employment in the area that year.
