In the early 1800s, Jasper County was established on the former land of the Creek Indians and named after an American Revolution Sergeant, William Jasper. Since it was founded, this frontier has taken a new form, shifting from acres of farmland to grazing pastures and tree farms. Monticello serves as the county town center, with the first railroad reaching there in 1887 when the county began to grow. It serves as a social and business center for locals, with small local restaurants and two grocery stores. Mom-and-pop shops dot the countryside, and the community gathers for many events throughout the year. “Monticello is kind of like a haven. The population is small; everyone knows everyone, and it’s away from everything. It’s a great place to live,” says Monticello Mayor and long-term resident Deashley Thurman.

Spacious fields and spacious homes
Long rural roads with vast green lots full of trees make up the residential areas of Jasper County. Locals can expect houses on nearly half an acre in the middle of the town center, while homes further into the quiet countryside can have around 5 acres surrounding them. Prairie-style and neocolonial homes that are less than 3,000 square feet range from $150,000 to $575,000. More spacious houses and properties over an acre range between $550,000 to $1.3 million. Large family homes, though older in make, can be found in the rural areas for lower prices, while large manors and ranches near the town center and in rural areas with vast properties are found in the higher ranges. Most family-style homes, those with a sizable yard and three to four bedrooms can be found for around $500,000 to $800,000. Homeowners use their land in various ways: maintaining expansive landscapes and lawns or homesteading with livestock and gardens full of homegrown produce. Home prices are lower here on average than in the rest of Georgia, with a market that frequently has new homes available.

Hunting season events and community focus
Jasper County is full of community events, despite its rural location. Locals love annual festivals like the Deer Festival and Halloween Haunticello, and a charity run called the Deer Dash 5K draws many attendees. The city of Monticello holds smaller, consistent events like the summer event, Market on the Square, and Small Business Saturday. “Everyone comes together for these events. They're a real drawing point for the community,” says Thurman. Aside from events, Jasper County is home to several local parks featuring extensive amenities and plenty of access to nature via walking trails and playgrounds at their most basic. Jasper County Recreation Department Park houses six baseball fields and The Monty, Monticello’s disc golf course. For year-round activities, the Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center contains 6,400 acres of wooded land with 22 ponds for fishing, a shooting range, hiking trails and vast expanses of forest perfect for hunting and camping.
