Gateway, located about 15 miles north of Seattle, is one of six neighborhoods in Mountlake Terrace, a community established for World War II veterans and officially incorporated in 1954. The neighborhood features a mix of traditional single-family homes and townhomes, with styles ranging from 1950s one-story ramblers to spacious multi-story Craftsman constructions. Newer developments include townhomes and the cottage-style homes of Velorum. Gateway's residential blocks often have small to moderate lawns and some are lined with sidewalks. The area includes two primary parks: Terrace Ridge Park, which offers 6 acres of walking paths, a playground, and open hillsides, and Forest Crest Playfield, a hub for youth sports with baseball and soccer fields. The Edmonds School District serves the neighborhood, providing education from elementary through high school. Van Ry Road is a key thoroughfare, leading to amenities such as a post office, Axis Pharmacy Northwest, and the Regal Cinebarre Mountlake theater. Dining options include Mazatlan Mexican Restaurant Mountlake and Gabriel’s Fire Restaurant, Grill and BBQ, known for its made-from-scratch recipes. Hemlock State Brewing Co. on 56th Avenue West offers a variety of ales, IPAs, and lagers in its taproom. For athletes, the Forest Crest Athletic Club provides tennis and pickleball courts, while the nearby Nile Shrine Golf Course offers a public par 67 layout. Annual events near Gateway include the July 3 fireworks show at Ballinger Park, the December tree lighting at city hall, and the long-running Arts of the Juried Art Show at Mountlake Terrace Public Library.
