Historic and new houses provide plenty of options for buyers
Known for its homes from the early 1900s, McLaughlin is a midtown Muskegon neighborhood that's gaining in popularity following a city-run project to jump start affordable housing. “Our population is now growing as young buyers — priced out of Grand Rapids and other, larger cities — come here to purchase nicer homes for better prices,” says Eric Shedd, a Realtor with Nexus Realty Muskegon. McLaughlin’s housing prices average below those of Downtown but offer similar access to the city’s amenities, which include public bus transit, recently renovated public schools and well-maintained parks.
A citywide initiative turned empty lots into new single-family homes
According to Shedd, Muskegon five years ago began facilitating the construction of homes on city-owned lots as part of a housing-infill project. Using tax-increment financing, the city partially pays for the project by banking on tax income from higher property values brought on by the conversion of vacant lots into housing. Launched in 2019, more than 140 homes have been built or begun, though not all in McLaughlin. Turning these empty lots into single-family homes, alongside nearly century-old homes, has changed the dynamic of the neighborhood, making it more populated and active than it had been for most of the last three decades, Shedd says. “Now, it’s cool to live close to downtown again.” House styles include bungalows, cottages, ranches and Colonial Revivals. “There are at least 50 homes with significant historical value in McLaughlin,” says David Medendorp, a Realtor with Medendorp Real Estate Group. “These were kept in great shape consistently since their construction in the early 1900s.” The homes built as part of the city project sell for about $135,000. Historic homes in McLaughlin are priced from about $250,000 to nearly $800,000, while homes in need of renovation are listed for $35,000 to about $80,000.
Newer two-story homes can be found in some parts of the McLaughlin neighborhood.

Charles Hackley Middle School is a brand-new public option for residents
Students growing up in McLaughlin are zoned for Muskegon City Public Schools. Students may attend Moon Elementary School, graded C- by Niche; Charles Hackley Middle School, graded C minus; and Muskegon High School, graded C plus. “McLaughlin is close to both the existing public high school and the new public middle school, which just opened for the 2024-2025 school year after construction,” says Shedd. CHMS (renamed from Muskegon Middle School) opened for the 2024-2025 school year in a brand-new, $33 million building on the grounds of the former Mercy Health Hackley Hospital. The new building features a music wing, a three-story science wing designed for STEAM studies, and a gymnasium with a walk-around track and a football field.

The community park provides a nearby place for kids to play
McLaughlin Community Park sits in the center of the neighborhood, offering a modern playground with slides and a rock-climbing area. There’s a shaded picnic pavilion with grills, a small field for playtime and murals painted on the fences separating the park from houses. On the other side of town, Evergreen Cemetery offers a public walking trail where locals take quiet strolls during nice weather.

Locals go northwest for shopping and dining
McLaughlin is entirely residential, without restaurants inside the neighborhood, so locals head north towards Lake Muskegon to dine out. Just under a mile northwest is Nipote’s Italian Kitchen, a common spot for date nights that serves authentic Italian pastas and entrees. Nearby, Morats Bakery sells pastries and to-go desserts, while Aldea Coffee provides an assortment of caffeinated and decaffeinated drinks. The nearest grocery store is ALDI.

It's easy to get downtown from McLaughlin
Just under 2 miles southeast of Lake Muskegon and downtown Muskegon, McLaughlin is around a 4-minute drive to the city center. Aside from driving, locals take Muskegon Area Transit bus routes to travel through the city. Muskegon County Airport is around 7 miles south of the neighborhood and offers direct flights to Chicago, where travelers can catch connecting flights to their final destinations.
