Merle Haggard, an American country music singer-songwriter, made Muskogee famous in 1969 with his hit tune “Okie from Muskogee.” The small, salt-of-the-earth city in rural eastern Oklahoma remains true to Haggard’s lyrics. So does its artsy and rustic downtown district, Central Muskogee, full of vintage brick buildings and cultural attractions paying homage to regional heritage. “The song really says it all. If we’re known for something, it’s that. We’re just a good, solid, rural town,” says Realtor Brian Kirk of Coldwell Banker Select, a longtime local with nearly 20 years of real estate experience.
A wide variety of single-family home styles
Outside the central business district, the wide, gridded streets are lined with an eclectic mix of Craftsman, cottage, Colonial Revival, and ranch-style homes. Many have broad front lawns shaded with elms, sycamores and oaks. Prices start under $100,000 and rise to about $300,000. Coody Creek, to the south, is prone to flooding. Muskogee County is vulnerable to tornadoes. Summers here are hot, and winters are chilly with minimal snowfall.
Central Muskogee’s vibrant dining and entertainment scene
Small, locally owned shops and eateries line Main Street in the historic Katy District. “We’re starting to revive Main Street with boutiques and restaurants and things. We have a lot of good eating places in Muskogee,” Kirk says. He recommends Watson’s Chophouse, a Midwestern-chic steakhouse. There’s also Max’s Garage, a casual bar and restaurant known for live music and karaoke nights, and Muskogee Brewing Company, a popular craft brewery.
The historic Depot District has more dining options, along with attractions like the Muskogee Little Theatre and the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame. Three Rivers Museum celebrates regional history. The Girl Scout statue out front honors Muskogee’s Mistletoe Troop, who made and sold the first-ever Girl Scout cookies. The Muskogee Civic Center holds big events, from concerts and fundraisers to seasonal fetes like the annual Muskogee Oktoberfest. “We just unveiled a statue of Merle Haggard at the Civic Center grounds, so that’s a new draw. I’m shocked at how many people are out there all the time taking pictures,” says Holly Rosser-Miller, an Interstate Properties Realtor with almost a decade of experience. Chain restaurants and retailers, including Walmart Supercenter and Aldi, line U.S. Route 62 to the north.

The district’s Early College High School program allows students to graduate with their high school diploma and an associate degree from Connors State College. Sadler Arts Academy is an A-minus-rated public magnet school for kindergarten through eighth grade.
Outdoor recreation and events at Muskogee parks, community centers
Several parks with playgrounds are scattered throughout Central Muskogee, including Gulick Park, Elliot Park, Optimist Park and Douglas-Maxey Park. Elliot Park also has lighted basketball courts, picnic areas and a seasonal sprayground. Close by, Spaulding Park has another playground, as well as an outdoor pool, a paved trail and tennis courts. Coody Creek Bark Park features canine agility equipment and separate areas for small and large dogs to play off-leash. Nearby, the Muskogee Fairgrounds hosts the annual Muskogee Fair, with carnival rides, rodeo shows, live music, local vendors and more. The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center offers after-school and summer youth programs, and puts on events like the annual Downtown Muskogee Halloween Boo-nanza. The Muscogee Indian Community Center offers youth and elder programs, from arts and crafts classes to chair volleyball games.
