Merkel
Originally founded as Windmill Town in the early 1880s, Merkel was primarily an agricultural community that shipped livestock and cotton via the Texas and Pacific Railway. After Dyess Air Force Base was established in the early 1940s, more military families began moving to town for a slower-paced life away from the city of Abilene to the east.
