Tilghman Island
A mound of oyster shells and a yacht club tell the story of Tilghman Island. The 3-mile-long island on Maryland’s Eastern Shore thrived in the late 1800s thanks to oyster harvesting. Discarded shells piled up in the harbor to form Avalon Island, where Tilghman Packing Co. opened and employed hundreds of locals in the seafood processing industry.
