The Bowery goes from Skid Row to swanky
A Bowery address, whether in a converted warehouse loft or a new development, oozes cool. But it wasn’t always this way. In the 1940s, The Bowery was known as Skid Row, a gritty boulevard of dilapidated flophouses and low-end bars. The neighborhood later became the capital of punk rock and poetry, edging up against the newly glamorous and gentrified neighborhoods of SoHo and Greenwich Village. In the 2000s, the area started its upscale transformation, cemented by the opening of the PUBLIC hotel on Chrystie Street in 2017. “Before Ian Schrager put the PUBLIC hotel on the map, there wasn’t any new high-end development. There was nothing but good nightlife," says Emanuele Fiore, a real estate agent at SERHANT with a decade of luxury sales experience in the city. "Today, nearly seven years later, The Bowery is peppered with new luxury condo buildings.”

Buzzy nightlife and boutiques like John Varvatos
The Bowery is no longer an area of dive bars and derelict storefronts. Sexy cocktail lounges, trendy restaurants and designer boutiques line the neighborhood streets. Inside the Bowery Hotel, the lobby bar and Italian eatery Gemma still buzz with a fashionable crowd. Other favorites include Rosie’s for tacos and the retro-inspired Flower Shop bar for gimlets and a game of pool. Occupying the legendary bar and music venue CBGBs, John Varvatos is a rock n' roll-inspired high-end menswear store infused with rock memorabilia. Other celebrated neighborhood institutions include the punk rock-themed Overthrow Underground Boxing Club, Rivington Guitars for vintage guitars and John Derian for fancy home goods. For groceries, there’s Whole Foods on Houston at Bowery.
The Bowery Hotel brings sophistication and charm to the neighborhood.

Accessible condos plus lavish penthouses at 215 Chrystie
Much of the Bowery is made up of low-rise tenement-style apartment and co-op buildings with a smattering of newer high-end condo developments. The neighborhood offers luxury living similar to nearby neighborhoods like SoHo or NoHo, but new construction is priced far lower. “The Bowery has the most accessible luxury real estate in downtown Manhattan,” Fiore says. Prices typically range from around $1.2 million to $5 million, depending on views and amenities; on the upper end, lavish penthouses at 215 Chrystie start at $19 million. More modest co-ops range from $675,000 to around $1.2 million.
Condos alone Chrystie offer urban living with great views in Bowery.

Murals and art galleries, including the New Museum
Along the Bowery, mixed among the restaurant-supply shops and lighting storefronts, are contemporary art galleries and legendary street murals. The New Museum is a must for contemporary art and The Hole is a trendy gallery specializing in emerging artists. The Shepard Fairey mural dedicated to CBGB and the punk band Bad Brains takes pride of place on Bowery and Bleecker, and Freeman’s Alley’s paste-ups, tags and murals and the Jean-Michel Basquiat Commemorative Plaque outside the artist’s former studio attract art and graffiti fans. “Street art is part of the fabric of The Bowery,” says Wayne Rada, founder of LISA Project, a nonprofit art organization dedicated to making and preserving art across the five boroughs. “Street art and local galleries help us remember why New York is unique.”
The Jean-Michel Basquiat Plaque commemorates the artist's life here in Bowery.

Sara D. Roosevelt Park is the green centerpiece of community
Sara D. Roosevelt Park – a stretch of green along Chrystie Street from Houston Street to Canal Street – is Bowery’s most beloved yet problematic outdoor sanctuary. It's known for thriving outdoor sports and recreation, but also has issues with homelessness and drug use. Stanton Street courts are where locals can shoot hoops; the park also has soccer fields and playgrounds. At M’Finda Kalunga Community Garden, neighborhood gardeners can tend to veggies and plants. Around the corner from the park, the local nonprofit The Bowery Mission has provided hot meals, overnight shelter and residential programs since 1879 to aid homelessness and hunger in the neighborhood.
The park was named for philanthropist and mother of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
The garden was established in 1991 after the site was left vacant for at least 10 years prior.
