Right off Jefferson Avenue, Beaconsdale is a Newport News area offering homes for a lower price compared to surrounding neighborhoods. Houses in the community started going up during World War II in an effort to provide more housing for shipyard workers and their families. In 1958, Newport News and Warwick merged to form modern-day Newport News, which still offers convenient access to Hampton Roads’ military jobs. “People move to the area to be close to the military bases,” says Danielle Kearns, a Realtor with RE/MAX Peninsula, who’s been selling homes in the area for five years. “Riverside Regional and Christopher Newport University are also big employers close by.” Homebuyers can find 1950s and later ranch-style homes and Cape Cods on modestly sized lots. Some homes feature driveways and detached garages, while others rely on street parking. “The homes here are older and smaller, but also less expensive,” says Kearns.
