Animal avenues in a quiet, forested Norfolk suburb

Pulling off Little Creek Road into the neighborhood of Bel-Aire feels a little like pulling into the wilderness thanks to the thick canopy of towering, mature trees and the natural names appended to many of its avenues. “The neat thing is, it’s all animal names – Coyote, Condor, I’m not sure what a Wapiti is, but Wapiti. There’s one street, Wolverine, that was never developed. That eventually became part of where Aldi is – there's a great trivia question,” jokes Mick Shaw, a Realtor with Howard Hanna Real Estate who grew up near Bel-Aire and has specialized in the Norfolk market for 18 years. “It’s really treed – it almost feels like you’re in some part of Virginia Beach like Bay Colony. Even the name, Bel-Aire makes it sound kind of chic, but it’s not pompous. Turnover is sparse, people stay around.” Its position between Hampton Roads military bases and Chesapeake Bay beaches help explain Bel-Aire's staying power, as does the enduring sense of suburban tranquility that inspires residents to put down roots and stay put as local businesses evolve and the tree canopy grows overhead.

Midcentury starter homes near Little Creek from $200,000

Along gently winding stretches and gridded, grassy blocks, Bel-Aire is a pocket of preserved midcentury suburbia. Brick ranch-style homes are especially common, but other popular single-family home styles built from the 1940s through 1960s are also found throughout the neighborhood. Smaller Cape Cods and ranch-style homes sell for $200,000 to $425,000. Larger split-levels and colonials go for $330,000 to $470,000. Plenty of mature trees shade well-spaced lots. Although sidewalks line only some streets, Shaw notes that Bel-Aire is full of enough quiet, residential roads for residents to go walking, jogging and biking through their neighborhood. Some properties border Little Creek, a narrow waterway that many use as a scenic backdrop for backyard patios; more adventurous residents can paddle kayaks along the tidal creek that leads into the Chesapeake Bay. While this winding watershed does create a small flood plain, most of Bel-Air does not fall into a higher risk zone.

The Leadership Center for the Sciences and Engineering at Norview High

Bel-Aire is served by three Norfolk City elementary schools. Many students will attend Larrymore Elementary School, which earns a C-plus from Niche. Azalea Gardens Middle School earns a C. B-rated Norview High School is home to the Leadership Center for the Sciences and Engineering, a magnet special learning community that attracts applicants from across the district interested in advanced math and science coursework.

Positioned between Naval Station Norfolk and Little Creek, access to HRT buses

Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story is around 3 miles east on Little Creek Road, with Naval Station Norfolk about 7 miles in the opposite direction. Downtown Norfolk is also around 7 miles from home. While the neighborhood is fairly car-dependent, Hampton Regional Transit buses do make stops along Little Creek Road and Chesapeake Boulevard. Norfolk International Airport is about 3 miles away, and Sentara Norfolk General Hospital is around 7 miles away.

Shopping and dining on Little Creek Road

East Little Creek Road forms Bel-Aire's southern border, full of strip mall plazas, standalone retailers and locally owned restaurants. As Shaw mentioned, the Aldi opened in 2022. Walmart and Food Lion are also nearby. Diners can stop into popular chains like El Azteca, or sit down at longstanding local joints. “Azalea Inn is a really good Greek restaurant that’s half sports bar, half restaurant now. It expanded again and again, took over the hardware store. It’s just such a neighborhood meeting spot – kids after their ball games, high school reunions. That type of place,” Shaw says. Bel-Aire Pancake House sits across Bison Avenue, known for its bubblegum-colored nostalgic diner ambiance.

Tarrallton Park and Community Center, nearby Ocean View beaches

Tarrallton Park sits behind its namesake elementary school within a couple of miles of Bel-Aire, stretching several baseball diamonds, tennis courts and playground equipment between tree-dotted fields and walking paths. Nearby, Tarrallton Community Center offers indoor basketball facilities, a multipurpose room and game room; many make use of its before and after school childcare programs. Ocean View Beach stretches along more than 7 miles of the Chesapeake Bay, and the access ramp and public restrooms draw many to the Community Beach Park entrance around 3 miles from Bel-Aire.

Community updates from the Bel-Aire Civic League

While meetings and activities are fairly infrequent, the Bel-Aire Civic League still keeps locals up to date on their community through their Facebook page. Between posts about found pets and ongoing construction projects, announcements for plant sales, farmers markets and holiday festivities offer ways to get together in nearby neighborhoods throughout the year. Ocean View Beach Park is especially popular through the warmer months, inviting fans of live music to bring their lawn chairs and dancing shoes to the Sunday night Big Bands on the Bay concert series or to celebrate Independence Day a week early with fireworks, food trucks and more live music at the Shore Thing Independence Day Celebration. Outside of regular services, Third Presbyterian Church also hosts community programs like square dancing on the first and third Thursdays of each month.
