North Charleston Home Trends
Don’t underestimate North Charleston. Just because it’s differentiated from the historic city on the peninsula, it’s actually the third largest city in the state of South Carolina. Stretching from the Windsor Place neighborhood up along Interstate 26 towards Ladson and Summerville, North Charleston is a fast-growing suburban accessory to historic Charleston, yet it still has a character all its own. Luxurious condos and both modern and long-standing homes make North Charleston a diverse real estate sector with lots of options for those looking to live in the Lowcountry. Like the rest of the Charleston area, North Charleston has seen lots of growth and expansion in the real estate market, yet it remains much more affordable than Charleston depending on where you look.
North Charleston Attractions
Outside of North Charleston are several parks alongside the Cooper and Ashley Rivers. The history of the area can be seen all over in destinations like Middleton Place, Drayton Hall, and Colonial Dorchester State Historic Site. There are plenty of modern amenities to see as well. Shopping abounds thanks to the outlet malls and shops off the interstate, and a burgeoning restaurant scene mirrors the cuisine found farther along the peninsula. Head east to Riverfront Park and soak up the scenes of the Lowcountry or visit the Friend of the Hunley museum where the 19th century submarine pulled from the depths of the Atlantic now sits.
North Charleston Schools
North Charleston schools encompasses 21 elementary schools, seven middle schools, seven high schools, and several highly rated magnet schools. Academic Magnet High School consistently ranks as one of the best schools in the nation. Residents also enjoy proximity to North Charleston’s own Charleston Southern University. There’s also a campus for Trident Technical College, which operates a popular bridge program into Charleston Southern or the College of Charleston.
Commuting in North Charleston
Traffic in North Charleston is expanding along with its resident population. Those who commute into Downtown Charleston can expect a one-way commute of around 30 minutes, extending up to 45 minutes during serious gridlock. North Charleston residents enjoy close proximity to the Charleston International Airport on the west side of the city. Those without a car or who prefer to use public transit have access to several bus lines that cover a majority of the city.
