When Gutherie was first developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Paducah was a fraction of its current size. The neighborhood only consisted of several farmhouses dotting the pastoral landscape. Gutherie still maintains a rural feel, but now the downtown, which is just several blocks to the east, has grown to include retail, entertainment and year-round festivities. Many of Gutherie’s original homes still stand, offering an opportunity for first-time homebuyers who might want to renovate them. Almost all houses in the neighborhood sell for well below Paducah’s median single-family home price. “Compared to the closest major cities like Nashville and Memphis, taxes, insurance, food, groceries and gas are relatively cheap in Paducah,” says Realtor Kartik Patel, who sells homes in the city with Keller Williams Experience Realty. The neighborhood is also close to an accessible recreation center and a technical learning center that teaches high school students about jobs in the trades and public health. The neighborhood is almost entirely made up of Craftsman-style bungalows. The neighborhood’s houses do not have attached garages, but some properties have separate garages.
