El Vista translates to “the view” in Spanish, but the view in this Peoria subdivision might look different than in other locations. The neighborhood is within walking distance of many city amenities, from the interstate along the eastern side to parks, restaurants and grocery stores. Further, this subdivision’s housing prices are lower than those of some surrounding neighborhoods, attracting those moving from Chicago to Peoria for the city feel and lower cost of living. Most of the homes in El Vista are Cape Cods built in the 40s and 50s, though homebuyers might find the occasional bungalow or ranch-style home mixed in. Grassy lawns run right to the curb, uninterrupted by sidewalks or other walkways. Some homes have paved driveways, while others park in the front yard instead. Homes here typically sell between $50,000 and $175,000, which is lower than nearby subdivisions like Forest Hills. For kindergarten through fourth grade, students head to Dr. Maude A. Sanders Primary School. Both it and Sterling Middle School receive C-minus rankings from Niche. C-rated Peoria High School originally opened in 1856, making it the oldest continuously functioning high school in Illinois.
