Events at SouthSide Works
Today, South Side Flats consists of modern businesses housed in brightly colored 19th-century buildings, office parks thriving in restored warehouses and revitalized green spaces that bring the community together through various events. “The community council hosts things like the Historic Home and Garden Tour and a Spring Social, which is the largest neighborhood party, at Pins Mechanical Co.,” says Mary Dowd, Realtor with Compass Realty, who is a resident and council member. Dowd also notes the council runs groups like South Side CAN, which stands for community action network, that aim to address homeowners’ concerns. South Side Kid is another group of local caregivers that plan kid-friendly events like pool parties and movie screenings. SouthSide Works, a multi-use development, hosts everything from vintage car shows to Music on the Lawn, a free weekly concert series from June to September.

Buzzing East Carson Street
East Carson Street is the main commercial corridor. As a designated historic district, East Carson stands out with late 19th-century architecture like the John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church, whose gleaming century-old Byzantine domes serve as neighborhood icons. The streets are lined with dozens of restaurants, bars, eclectic boutiques and nightclubs. Giant Eagle Supermarket and Aldi are also within walking distance. Local shops sell everything from Pittsburgh merch to vintage finds, and spots like Hollywood Feed cater to pet owners. Eateries serve up flavors from around the globe, and pubs range from dive bars to upscale cocktail bars. “Cafe De Jour is a personal favorite,” Dowd says, “but South Side Flats is a destination spot with restaurants like Dish Osteria Bar that always has a reservation waitlist.”
On the street’s eastern end, SouthSide Works is a massive open-air, mixed-use center with a town square, national retailers and eateries like Hofbräuhaus Pittsburgh. The restaurant is a German brewery known for Bavarian favorites like schnitzel, an expansive beer garden and weekly live music. Patrons can also join its beer, or bier, club for discounts throughout the year. Across the street, Pins Mechanical Co. is a bar with nostalgic arcade games, mini bowling alleys and two indoor steel slides. As one of Pittsburgh’s nightlife hotspots, weekends in Southside Flats can include noisy crowds, so those who want to avoid the commotion may choose to live a couple of blocks away.

Recreation at Southside Riverfront Park
Green spaces like Southside Riverfront Park line the banks of the Monongahela River. Home to the Three Rivers Heritage Trail, the river attracts walkers, bikers, joggers and daydreamers. On the trail’s eastern end is Color Park, a local — and legal — graffiti space. Benches offer a peaceful place to gaze at Pittsburgh’s skyline and beautifully arching bridges. The neighborhood is also home to the Steelers training facility, conveniently located next to the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex, a state-of-the-art sports medicine facility.

Often found in bright hues, most single-family homes range in price from the mid $100,000s to the $500,000s, depending on updates. “It’s morphing over to professionals who want convenience and proximity to Pittsburgh, and this has brought new projects in terms of housing,” Bingham says. These projects include contemporary buildings with large glass windows ranging from the $500,000s to the $900,000s. New developments also include the conversion of existing buildings into condominiums and apartments. However, homebuyers should note that flooding is a concern due to the neighborhood’s low elevation and proximity to the river.

Southside Flats students are zoned to Pittsburgh City Schools, which scores an overall C-plus rating on Niche. Elementary schoolers may attend Pittsburgh Phillips K-5, a magnet school that offers Spanish immersion and earns a C-plus rating from Niche. The University of Pittsburgh’s Medical Center is nearby, with hospitals like UPMC Mercy, UPMC Presbyterian and the VA. Bus routes run along East Carson Street, the neighborhood’s main thoroughfare, and Pittsburgh International Airport is about 20 miles northwest along Interstate 376.
