A hill community with steel industry roots
Settled just two miles southeast of downtown across the Monongahela River, South Side Slopes is a densely populated Pittsburgh neighborhood amid the craggy hills of Appalachia. Containing parks, schools and a variety of restaurants and bars, South Side Slopes' host of useful perks makes it an attractive community in the Steel City. "It's kind of a quirky neighborhood, in a good way. People who live there tend to like it a lot," says local Realtor Cameron Logan of RE/MAX Select Realty, who has sold several homes in the neighborhood. "It's kind of got a little artsy vibe." Rob Borgo, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker, says that the neighborhood is popular amongst college students and young professionals. The hilly and steep community also has some breathtaking panoramic sightlines since several of the houses are on high points overlooking the city. “There are some crazy good views of the entire city,” Borgo says. In fact, he says the views, along with affordability, the uniqueness of the older streets and proximity, are a big draw.
South Side Sloops has a historic role in the steel industry. By 1910, South Side’s J&L (The Jones and Laughlin Steel Company) had grown to employ 15,000 people, making it the biggest employer on the South Side. Most of these workers were immigrants from Slavic countries, Ukraine, Lithuania, Poland, Germany, and Ireland; they settled in what is now known as South Side Slopes.

Homes built in the early 1900s are part of the housing stock
Along South Side Slopes' notoriously hilly, loosely gridded streets are an abundance of older homes built in the early 1900s featuring a mishmash of architectural styles. The housing stock includes American Foursquares, cottages and ranch homes, and an array of row houses. “It’s crazy, the homes are so old,” says Borgo. “These are old steel worker homes with sandstone foundations. Some of the homes have modern additions.” On average, most of the homes are around 1,450 square feet; the lots have an average of 2,180 square feet. An older row house can price between $75,000 to $200,000, while larger homes with city views can top out around $500,000. Overall, housing costs are between $64,000 and $924,000. The housing market in South Side Slopes is relatively competitive, with many homes being sold within a month. "You're looking at three to four weeks on the market," Logan says. "Overall, the housing is very affordable." The Cap Index crime score for the area is 6 out of 10, which is higher than the national average of 4.

Nearly 100 pubs in the community
Locals are within walking distance of many restaurants, bars and local businesses. Nearly a hundred bars and pubs make this area renowned as a great place to go out on the town. Meet up with friends at Corner Cafe on South 18th Street to catch the big game or grab a drink after work. Directly across the street is 350° Bakery — a revered pastry shop highlighted by its signature breakfast sandwiches and specialty cookies and cupcakes. For a morning jolt, Hilltop Coffee on Arlington Avenue has coffees and iced lattes. "Do yinz want some Ohio Valley-style pizza, a Pittsburgh salad or a Primanti Brothers sandwich and a pop?" is a common question heard by patrons at local restaurants. Translation: What would you all want to eat—a pizza with cold toppings, a salad with fries on top, or a sandwich with cheese, meats, and coleslaw along with a soda? The sandwich's backstory is that Primanti Brothers made it so local truck drivers could deliver goods while keeping one hand on the wheel and one hand on the sandwich. For groceries, the neighborhood Aldi is stationed less than a mile north of South Side Slopes. Locals can also pop by Giant Eagle Supermarket or the Aldi in South Side Flats for fresh meats and produce or pick up drinks and snacks from Arlington Mart on the South Side.
