Shops, restaurants and movies in Squirrel Hill Business District
One facet of Squirrel Hill's prominence is its vibrant business district set up along the corridors of Forbes and Murray Avenues. It offers an extensive collection of local shops and restaurants and other things to do, all reachable by foot, bike or car, no more than a mile away. Though there are dozens of restaurants, some popular options include Alladin's – known for its authentic Lebanese food and Everyday Noodles – where diners can enjoy the famous soup dumplings while watching a noodle-making show from behind the kitchen window. Those walking down the busy commercial strip will find anything from small bookshops to record stores and vintage boutiques. Some businesses have been around for decades, like Little's Shoes, a family-run shoe store serving the community since 1932. Shoppers can get groceries and everyday essentials at Giant Eagle or hit up specialty markets like Murray Avenue Kosher and Panda Supermarket. After a day of shopping and dining, locals can visit Manor Theatre, which opened its doors in 1922 and shows both indie films and Hollywood blockbusters. The business district comes alive at night with the movie theater featuring late-night films and many restaurants open until 10 p.m.

Street festivals on Forbes
The business district is one of the main hubs for community events, including trick-or-treating and frequent street festivals like Squirrel Hill Night Markets. The free festival shuts down Forbes Avenue three times a year to make way for live music, local art and food from neighborhood restaurants. Locals also enjoy shopping for fresh produce and handmade products from vendors at the Squirrel Hill Farmers Market every Sunday from May through November.
Century-old estates and cobblestone streets
"The homes are very pretty and have lots of character and charm," says Rost. "No two houses are the same on any street." The neighborhood primarily features single-family homes from the early 1900s fixed on quarter- to half-acre lots along hilly tree-lined streets. Various architectural styles can be found all over the neighborhood, such as Colonial Revivals and Queen Annes, with large front porches. Homes can range anywhere from $750,000 for a 2,200-square-foot house to $3 million for a seven-bedroom mansion right next door. Some of these grand estates are located along the old cobblestone street in the neighborhood's Murray Hill Avenue Historic District near Chatham University. While rare, a few one- to three-bedroom condos along Fifth Avenue range from $200,000 to $300,000.

A short trip to community parks
Residents enjoy walking to Wightman Park at the center of the community, where kids can play on the all-inclusive playground and the ball field through Squirrel Hill Baseball. It also has a paved walkway through a rain garden, a basketball court and a pavilion for family get-togethers. Two of Pittsburgh's most prominent parks are just within arm's reach.
