Mount Tabor is named after an extinct volcano, now a popular hike
Mount Tabor is a Northeast Portland neighborhood known for its namesake green space, which surrounds an extinct volcano with panoramic views of the city and the West Hills. Quiet, walkable streets are lined with homes that vary from original Craftsman builds from the late 1800s to sleek midcentury modern designs. Neighborhood eateries, breweries and movie theaters are nearby, and Downtown Portland is under 6 miles away as well.
Home prices and infill opportunities
Mount Tabor has a unique collection of architecture. Original Craftsman homes — some dating back to the late 1800s — sit near English Tudor-style houses from the early 1900s, midcentury Minimal Traditional builds as well as sleek midcentury modern designs. While the median year of construction in the neighborhood is 1930, more recent builds are also available. “There is new construction because a lot of our lot sizes are very generous, so people have been able to put in new houses on houses that had double lots,” says Tracy Wiens, a Realtor with John L. Scott Portland Central and a Mount Tabor resident herself. Homes added between the 1980s and 2023 often follow Craftsman architectural principles. Properties throughout Mount Tabor range from the low $400,000s to roughly $2 million, and the average home value in the neighborhood was around $770,000 at the beginning of 2025.

Commuting, public transportation and getting around on foot
Mount Tabor is fairly walkable — most streets have sidewalks, and homes are within walking distance of Mt. Tabor Park and amenities on Burnside or Division Street, depending on where they’re located in the neighborhood. Cycling is also pretty convenient, with quiet residential streets that don’t get much through traffic.
Hawthorne Boulevard, Division Street and Interstate 84 all lead west toward downtown Portland. The city center is about 6 miles away, though the commute can take about 25 minutes when there’s heavier traffic. Five TriMet bus routes serve the neighborhood, and several of them travel downtown.
Amenities, shopping centers and entertainment nearby
Mount Tabor is sandwiched between Burnside and Division Street, both of which have several eateries. Residents will find more amenities on Stark Street to the east and Hawthorne Boulevard to the west, including:
Popular local restaurants, like The Observatory and Redwood
Coffee shops, including Common Grounds Coffeehouse and Bipartisan Cafe
Unique shops, like Wink Vintage and Powell’s Books on Hawthorne
For essentials, there’s a QFC on the north side of the neighborhood, a Fred Meyer even farther north and the Eastport Plaza Shopping Center — with Marshalls, Hong Phat Supercenter, a Cinemark Century movie theater and ample casual dining — less than 4 miles away. While there’s plenty of dining near the neighborhood, Coquine shines in Mount Tabor itself with seven James Beard Foundation Award nominations and a five-course, prix fixe menu. The historic Academy Theater in neighboring Montavilla screens blockbusters as well as classic films, and moviegoers can enjoy food from Flying Pie Pizzeria or sushi from Miyamoto in the theater.

Trails, a dog run and outdoor recreation at Mt. Tabor Park
Mt. Tabor Park is easily the neighborhood’s most unique amenity. Centered around an extinct cinder cone volcano — one of only six in the country that are located within city limits — the nearly 200-acre park has a number of hiking trails, some of which are paved with volcanic cinders. “The views are amazing. You get good views of the city,” says Peter Cutile, a real estate agent with Modern Realty, who has about a decade of experience. “People who live in the city center, they can walk to Forest Park. This is a similar thing farther out east.” Otherwise, the park offers tennis courts, a volleyball court, a horseshoe pit and an off-leash dog area, among other amenities.
Mt. Tabor Park is also the setting of the PDX Adult Soapbox Derby, an annual event founded in 1997. Every third Saturday in August, as many as 10,000 spectators come to the park to watch contestants race down the old volcano in makeshift cars, vying for awards for speed, engineering and fan-favorite design.

I enjoyed living in Mt Tabor. I could walk to Mt Tabor and hike everyday. The buses and trains run very frequently. I felt safe there and would walk at night though there was a drive by shooting in front of the house. Apparently that rarely happens there.
