Butler Island is a 600 acre private Lake Champlain destination which is only accessible by boat. It is a special child and adult friendly island ready to make great new lifetime of memories. Hike the 6 mile perimeter nature path or just be a hermit. Watch the lake with her ever changing colors during the sun rises and sun sets. No thought about car traffic, noise and dust. Just watch the Adirondacks or Green Mountains as your backdrop. Enjoy barbecues, dock hopping with friends, every water activity you can imagine or just quiet island time. Butler Island residents have been known to boast about some of the cleanest water in Lake Champlain. GENERAL INFORMATION Accessibility: The Island is only accessible by boat or over the ice during winter. Boats are typically owned and operated by Island residents. During the last few years there has been two charter services which will transport people to and from the Island. This service is mostly used when extra guests are expected or your boat is out of commission. Boat Sizes: Commuting boats vary from basic open aluminum fishing boats to fiberglass and aluminum bow riders, plus pontoon boats with either inboard or outboard motors. Island living will require many dock landings. Boat sizes typically range from 16' to 24'. Permitting: Existing cottages are grandfathered for waste water if constructed before 2007. Out houses and compost toilets are allowed for new construction. Conventional septic systems are also allowed if the property owner can find a sufficient soil depth area for the leach field.
