Known locally as the ‘Belk home’ (aka the Historic Johnson-Belk home). First purchased from Duke Power in 1937 by Curtis B. Johnson (owner of the Charlotte Observer). The Belk family (of Belk Department Stores) purchased the home in 1947 and made many improvements, then later sold the home in 1960. A group of Charlotte businessmen purchased the home, created the Commodore Yacht Club and used the home as a clubhouse for social events. Several years later Commodore Yacht Club purchased an adjacent 550 acres for development, which would become River Hills. Eventually the home was restored to the single family residence it is today.
