The Asahel Olcott house, constructed in 1782 by a Revolutionary War veteran, was saved from demolition in 2016 by the owner of Sunderland Period Homes, a local custom builder known for his expertise in historic restoration. Located on “Old” Main Street in South Windsor, considered to be one of the most architecturally significant places in Connecticut, the home has been reconstructed from the ground up preserving as many original features as possible, including wide plank floorboards, wood paneling, all six fireplaces, a beehive oven, and the original staircase. The home also boasts a unique architectural feature, the “Beverly Jog”, which is an addition that extends from the side of the house and is found almost exclusively on homes on the North Shore of Massachusetts. Restored elements include a new concrete foundation to support the original brownstone foundation, new framing and floor joists, reproduction 12-over-12 windows and frames, and such modern amenities as insulation and updated wiring. The center chimney has been rebuilt, and all six fireplaces have been inspected and are functional. The house is ready for its next owner to complete the home to their specifications. Custom plans designed by Sunderland Period Homes contemplate an addition to include a primary bedroom suite, custom kitchen, family room, and laundry.
