Briggs, an illustrious former Mayor of Bolivar and Justice of the Peace of Harpers Ferry for forty years, who was first posted to the area as a Captain in the 1st Connecticut Cavalry I 1863 and 1864. Local lore has it that, before and during the war a medical doctor rented the property and saw patients there. General Thomas J. (Stonewall) Jackson is said to have written a letter to his wire that, form his quarters, he could see the physician's house across the street. The cannonball embedded in a downstairs fireplace dates from this period.
