Take a walk back in time when you visit the Clarkson Farm with approximately 160.2 acres of land in Williamsburg County. This home was listed in 1988 on the National Register of Historic Places. The main 3,745sqft home was built by William Nicoll Clarkson around 1905. According to the National Register, most of the lumber came from pine trees on this property and the style of this home was known as, ''expanded I-house, a type found throughout South Carolina but most commonly in the Piedmont.'' The expansive, two story porch wraps the exterior of this grand home. Bead board ceilings, turned balusters, narrow double doors with sidelights and transoms are just a few of the architectural details on the exterior. As you enter the home, you are welcomed by a wide, central foyer with hardwood floors and a grand staircase. To the left of the foyer is the formal living room with hardwood floors, fireplace and coved ceiling. On the right is a large bedroom with another coved ceiling, fireplace and wood floors, dressing area and private bath. The moldings in this home are amazing. A second bedroom with a third fireplace and full bath is conveniently located downstairs. The formal dining room will accommodate a huge table for entertaining many guests. Guests will enjoy sitting in the dining room in front of the fireplace and looking out of the bay window. The kitchen features a large island and bead board ceilings and walls. A separate laundry room is conveniently located near the kitchen. A cozy family room is situated near the kitchen and dining room. Upstairs, you will find three more bedrooms that all include a fireplace, tongue and groove bead boards on the walls and ceilings, and hardwood floors. There is another wide hallway that leads to double doors that open to the upstairs porch. A full bath services these bedrooms.
Outside, a porte cochere was constructed around 1924 and provides a wonderful place to escape the rain from your vehicle and enter the home. Guests will enjoy relaxing on the wide porches and enjoy all the views that the farm provides. There is plenty of room for rocking chairs, joggling boards and swings. Just behind the porte cochere is a stable/garage with a concrete floor that dates 1924. Mr. Clarkson enjoyed placing the dates on his buildings. Near the main house, you will find three other buildings (the pump house, smokehouse and wellhouse). The artesian well system still services the property today. The property around the main residence is enclosed by a fence. The front fence is brick lattice and continues along the side property lines with brick posts and white, wooden pickets. To the south of the main residence, was a pecan grove with some trees still remaining.
Across the street from the residence is the Clarkson Store built in 1896 as inscribed in the left column. The store was moved to its current location in 1928 and that date is inscribed on the other column. According to the National Register, Mr William Nicoll Clarkson (1871-1956) was a successful merchant, cotton gin operator, farmer & member of the South Carolina House of Representatives. This store is, "one of few surviving rural commercial buildings of its period in the Pee Dee region." The interior of the store also included Mr. Clarkson's office and the Heineman Post Office.
Adjacent to the store was another garage that was built in 1928. This building is brick with a gable metal roof. There is approximately 40 acres of row crop land that is currently leased to a local farmer. There is also an additional 120 acres that includes some natural ponds and could be timber for hunting or reforestation. This home would make a wonderful bed and breakfast, hunting lodge wedding venue or just become a new home for a new family! The Clarkson Family has loved it for over a century and they would love to see another family give it the same love in the future. "Nothing can be finer that to be in Carolina in the morning!" Make this your new Carolina home.
