History/Notable Provenance
Several prominent families have owned the home over the years. The home was designated as a historic landmark by the Springfield City Council in 1979.
1907-1917 Elizabeth Stoughton, wife of James Stoughton, built the home in 1907. The Stoughtons owned a third of the Springfield Street Railway Company. Mr. Stoughton was a merchant on Commercial Street and responsible for much of the upbuilding of Springfield.
1917-1946 Dr. James Evans (a notable ear, nose and throat physician who practiced in Springfield for many years) and his wife Mittie purchased the house in 1917.
1951-1959 General Ralph Truman, a noteworthy military figure and cousin of the late President Harry S. Truman. Ralph Truman was deeded the property from Lewis Rowland when Ralph married Rowland's daughter Olive. Harry Truman has been photographed standing in front of the house with the original stone lions flanking both sides of the porch steps. Presidential phone lines installed by the Secret Service still exist inside the wall next to the kitchen.
