History:
Mauricena Plantation holds a special place in the history of rice cultivation in Georgetown. It was instrumental in coining the term Carolina Gold in the late 1800s, referring to the region’s prized high-quality rice.
The plantation was once owned by Reverend Maurice Lance and his wife, Anna Maria Taylor Allston. Along with Mauricena, they also owned and operated Wedgefield, Springfield, Mansfield, and Greenwich plantations. By 1850, the combined rice production at Wedgefield and Mauricena reached over 660,000 pounds, cultivated by the labor of 262 slaves. This immense contribution played a central role in Georgetown’s legacy of rice production in the region.
