Welcome to 202 South Walnut Street in Historic West Chester Borough. 202 was the first house built across from the original farmhouse of 1812 by Robert Mercer in 1855. The twin next door was built later. Though he opened up this section of the borough for development he himself was not able continue living here. Later editions were added and eventually it came to resemble the townhouses we see today. Situated on two lots with a barn, the yard and porch occupied what would have Been 200 S Walnut. Later the barn was sold off and converted for living. By the late 70’s the house was split into small rooms housing seasonal migrants who worked for the mushroom farms off S Matlack. It was restored to a single family dwelling by 1984. Improvements included brand new electrical service and plumbing, restored hardwood floors, mahogany porch with its original roof and beams, concrete basement floor, as well as converting the back shed into a kitchen. Later the old tin roof was replaced with extensive work underneath and insulation and roof vents added. The stair case was restored with a brand new banister rising up to all floors and outside walls repointed. Stunning in the Spring, flowering cherry trees on both sides shade the outside bricked patio throughout the warm seasons. Other features include a powder room built under the stairs, a cedar lined closet on the second floor, spacious master bedroom, and living room with 12' high ceilings not generally found in most townhouses built in later years.
