Created by celebrated architect Virginia McDonald, no expense was spared in building this 3,500 square foot custom home in cool upper Waiakea Uka, five miles above Hilo.

Ten to twelve-foot ceilings, skylights and large picture windows drink in natural light, illuminating a spacious living area accented by white oak floors, solid wood cabinets, and granite countertops.

A beautiful chef’s kitchen anchors the home’s core, featuring top-end appliances and ample space for food preparation. Dual living rooms and a formal dining area round out the home’s main living spaces, where imported Italian furniture contrasts with pieces dating back to China’s Qing dynasty.

Privacy is priority in the home’s bedrooms, which each have a private bath. A generous master suite leads into a spa-style bathroom with skylights, allowing views of the stars from a Jacuzzi-style tub.

A spacious office and library is perfect for working from home, and can be easily converted into a guest room or fourth bedroom.

Clever design elements include a whole-home ventilation system and silent floor joists. Open some of the home’s 26 floor vents in the summer to allow cool air to filter in while hot air gets pushed through built-in portals in the ceiling and roof. Close the vents in the winter and turn on the great room’s gas fireplace to keep things warm and cozy.
