Founded by Capt Smith in the 17th century, seasonal occupation by Native Americans goes back more than 12,000 years. Smith Island is rich in maritime history and is the home to the original Smith Island Cake. It's said even Blackbeard made Smith Island his occasional resting place between his pirating ventures. You'll find very few automobiles here, but a lot of golf carts and bicycles to easily get around. This cottage style home has easy living on one level, but has a third bedroom loft with bath for overflow guests. The eat-in kitchen is large as are the living room and dining room areas. This would make for an ideal vacation rental property or year round personal residency. Seller says with the right offer, he can (short term) finance and all appliances convey for added convenience. It is cooled by a wall unit, and heated by individual room units, but converting to wall hugging units like an Envi-120V would be a snap, or convert to Mitsubishi wall units for both heating and air. The taxes are incredibly low- under $450 a year, the electric runs about $35 a month, and the water is about $100 a year, all refuse is disposed of at the community incinerator, there is central community water and sewer, so no well or septic to contend with. There is NO HOA fee and NO land lease. Smith Island is a waterman's and crabbing paradise and is only accessible by ferry or private yacht across the Tangier Sound. Residents of the Island can trace their ancestry back 13 generations to England and Wales, and Smith Island is inhabited by one of the region's oldest English-speaking communities, sometimes inaccurately thought to be described as 'Elizabethan' or 'Shakespearean.' If you're looking for a place to call home, or as a vacation landing place like no other, then chart a course for Smith Island. There are restaurants, gas, (for your boats and few cars on the island,) rental bikes, kayaks, golf carts, and more. The islanders take a quick kayak paddle over to the beach island for an afternoon of sunning and beachcombing. There is no police force on the Island but it won't take long to discover the friendliness of the islanders makes it unnecessary. There is a volunteer fire department and grade school for the tykes as well as a community center. Come, see what the Chesapeake has to offer you! Island visitors: the Smith Island Cruise Line passenger ferry runs seasonally as does Capt Jason and Tyler, from May to Sept. They leave the dock in Crisfield at 12:30 sharp and returns from Smith Island at 4:30 each day. Off season, you can catch the Smith Island Mail Ferry at the Crisfield dock at 12:30. It returns to Crisfield the next morning at 7:30am. Please note, these are passenger ferry's only. Large oversized items such as autos, household furniture, appliances etc, must be ferried by barge.
