The home was the residence of prominent businessman and Joliet Alderman, Joseph Braun, Jr. It is also an excellent design by architect Hugo Boehme. The Braun house is simplified Queen Anne structure with Colonial Revival flair. The Queen Anne style is seen in the beautiful steep pitched roof which has a front gable with cut shingles. There is also a curved bay with matching curved porch on the front. This design matches the porches on two other Boehme structures, the Conkling house and the Goldberg house. The simple porch supported on small classical columns is a reflection of the Colonial Revival, which was becoming popular at this time. The Joseph Braun, Jr. home was constructed on the fashionable strip of larger German homes in Joliet. The house, designed by German architect Hugo Boehme, was constructed around 1890 next to the home of Mrs.Braun's father, Joseph Stoos. Mr. Stoos was the first known architect in Joliet, as well as a well known builder in Joliet. He lived in an impressive stone Greek Revival home (burned in the 1980s). He also designed and built the old stone Jefferson Street bridge, the old St.Joseph's Hospital, the old Central School, and the Porter Brewery building on Bluff Street. The structure housed the Braun family for many years. The last of the Braun daughters lived in the home into the 1970s. Joseph Braun was born in 1860 in Naperville to immigrants from Bavaria. Joseph Braun Sr., moved to Joliet in 1865 and opened a brewery. After his death in 1869, Fred Sehring purchased and renamed the brewery. Joseph Jr. entered the store of David Rosenheim in 1877 as a clerk, making $3 a week. He rose through the ranks in various retail stores until in 1884, he bought out Charles Brooks and organized Braun and Raub. His store was on Jefferson Street, and he continued in business until 1893. In that year, he followed in his father's footsteps and entered the brewing business. He helped to form E. Porter Brewery and served as secretary, treasurer and general manager. In the political field, Mr. Braun held the office of Joliet Township Supervisor, as well as city oil inspector under Mayor Haley. He also served several terms as alderman, where he served on the committees on claims, street lighting, finance, and printing. He also worked hard for the city to purchase two parks, Bush and East Side. Joseph Braun Jr. was married in Joliet to Theresa Stoos.
