About This Home

As of November 2020

Going on Two Hundred (200) years old and looking FABULOUS! Sylvania, one of the Upstate's finest and most historic plantations, is back on the market after five generations in the Wideman family since their purchase in 1847. Built by Col. John Hearst in 1825 this original Two Thousand (2,000) acre cotton plantation with a remaining One Hundred and Sixty-Two (162) original acres now offers the best in social distancing. This elegant, historic and architecturally significant home has been listed in the National Historic Register since 1977. Original antique heart pine floors cover the original portion of the home. Typical of the period a central hallway divides the original section of the home from front to back with heart pine paneling, a single flight open string stairway with brackets and unique original stenciling below the cornice and above the wainscoting. Two large rooms off each side of the hallway to the front of the house are the parlor and dining room each with a fireplace. The parlor window actually has two bullet holes in a window that struck the home from errant gunfire in the infamous Phoenix riot of 1898. Now only peace and serenity prevail but it makes for interesting supper conversation. A copy of the Historic Register nomination is available along with other disclosures. The study/library is accessed from the parlor or the hallway. A bedroom and bath makeup the balance of the downstairs original section. The stairs lead to a wide upstairs hallway and sitting area allowing access to two bedrooms and a bath on the second level. Two beautifully conceived modern additions were added to each side of the main house in 1997. One side contains the master bedroom suite with its own deck, fireplace, vaulted ceilings, bath, laundry and loft area. The master is accessed from the library/study. The other side addition provides for the kitchen/breakfast area containing a mudroom and office that also leads to that most cherished room of all southern homesthe screened porch. Just off the screened porch is a lovely, well maintained pool with apron that complement and overlook the grounds. There are multiple outbuildings of which most date to the nineteenth century. They include a brick smokehouse, a clapboard wellhouse, an office (perhaps an old slave cabin according to the Register nomination), a carriage house, barn and playhouse. There is a dog run in place, a shed for several vehicles, and equipment shed. Equipment for the property is listed separately and is available as a separate negotiation. The main house is beautifully landscaped in front with an antebellum, formal boxwood garden and ancient, stately magnolias enclosed by a picket fence. The style of the fence repeats the arcades (in reverse) of the six columned veranda above which sits a piazza embellished by a Palladian window. The rear faade incorporates a double portico with double doors opening onto each level from the central hallways. For your equine friends the barn has been converted to a three (3) stall horse barn with tack and feed rooms and a large hayloft. The ten (10) acre pasture which includes a three and a half (3.5) acre fish pond completes the idyllic setting for this property. The remainder of the 162 acres is planted in merchantable timber with various aged stands for future income. Teeming with deer, turkey, dove, duck, wild geese and birds of many different feathers it is ideal for the hunter, the wildlife enthusiast, the ornithologist or all the above. The rural nature of this property is almost guaranteed due to its proximity to the Long Cane District of the Sumter National Forest and thousands of acres of private conservation easements. A conservation easement on Sylvania was purposefully withheld as a potential benefit to the new owner. Also, the enormous Lake Thurmond (formerly Clarks Hill) is so close a boat is almost required.
