501 East 79th Street was built in 1959 as a co-op. It was never a rental building, and therefore was built in mind to lure buyers over from Park and Fifth Avenue, which at that time had the majority of cooperatives. Most buildings further east at that time were rentals. Because of that, the developers made the room size more gracious, the layouts more interesting, and had few apartments per floor. The building also always has commercial space below, which allows for very reasonable maintenance, plus all utilities, including electric are included.

The building has recently completed a magnificent renovation of the entire faade, lobby, elevators and roof-deck. It is now one of the most beautiful post-war buildings in the area. Everything was done with the finest taste in the finest materials. People pass the building in the neighborhood and are impressed and jealous! They pass the lobby and say "you really kicked it out of the park". The building has a 24-hour concierge, live-in superintendent, bike room, and central laundry. It also has a private garage that accommodates about 25 cars with a waiting list, but there are many 24-hour garages on the block. It is pet friendly, and allows pied-a-terres with Board approval. There is currently an assessment of $1,051.88, however that ends in less than a year, and was specifically targeted for the beautiful renovation of the building. The location is very desirable, it's on a wide residential block of Yorkville, but close to anything you could possible want - great schools, public transportation, restaurants, fantastic food markets and supermarkets, pharmacies, the best parks, a library and post office all literally minutes away.
