Designed by Lafayette architect David L Perkins who in 1954 began the architectural department at the then SLI as a feeder program to Tulane. In 1957 he resigned from teaching and opened his own private practice. He designed 8 houses in Bendel Gardens including this, his personal home. Built on one and a half lots on the corner of Laurence and Marjorie the yard is heavily landscaped and affords lovely views through all the wonderful glass windows. The main house has 3250 square feet of living area. In addition to the main home, off the carport, there is a 200 square foot guest room with its own full bathroom and a hotel typeair/heat system. Outside is a shed, and a workshop! The workshop could easily be incorporated into the guest suite and used as a studio, office, mother-in -law apartment, or whatever you envision. Inside (all
original design) are large, flowing rooms, varied ceiling treatments and ceiling heights, columns, cork flooring under the carpet in the den, skylights, large windows, jalousie windows, plantation shutters, lots of Red Gum paneled walls, 3 HVAC units, a greenhouse room, sewing room, and a piano room. There are
two living areas, one with a gas start fireplace, beams, wood ceilings. There is a large kitchen with tons of storage and counter space, a greenhouse type ceiling, a down draft stove top, and double ovens. The master bedroom has an en suite bathroom, a large walk-in closet, and a sewing/ study room at the back.
There is a fallout shelter on the property that was not opened in 40 years. The home does need a new roof, some of the Pella windows have lost their seals, and rotten wood. The sellers welcome inspections but will do no repairs. The home definitely needs to be returned to its former glory.
