The 1893 house is Staunton’s finest example of the Queen Anne style, with an imaginative floor plan, multiple roofs, and a great variety of textures and materials. Designed by the Philadelphia firm of Yarnall & Goforth, Oakdene features outstanding craftmanship and fine materials – notably a limestone foundation, pressed brick, patterned shingles, painted stone, half-timbered stucco, and a three story turret topped by a sentry owl with illuminated eyes. The interior retains exceptional Gothic Revival details with pointed arches, natural oak woodwork, elaborately detailed mantels and trim, curved walls, and an abundance of distinctive windows and sunrooms that provide variety and richness in a bright setting. Several porches offer easy access to the beautifully landscaped yard and terraced gardens with limestone walls and stone walkways. Built in 1893 for Edward Echols, Virginia’s lieutenant governor from 1898 to 1902, Oakdene has been lovingly restored by the current owners.
