  • Remarks Public Addendum: The Samuel Hayes II House is significant because it is a well-preserved example of a type of colonial domestic architecture of which there are very few examples in Connecticut or New England. The interior of the home features a remarkable amount of original and historically significant material. The living space stands as an exceptionally well-preserved example of mid-18th-century Georgian architecture, showcasing extremely wide floorboards, elegant corner cupboards, period staircases, and original wall paneling. Doors, hardware, plastered walls, and fireplace surrounds all date from the period and are of exceptional quality and craftsmanship. This home is one of only two of its kind remaining in Granby/East Granby. Historical records also suggest the existence of a third, built-perhaps not coincidentally-in 1769, which once stood in nearby North Granby. Samuel Hayes, Jr. was an important local leader between 1760 and 1800, and is representative of important forces at work in rural America in the Revolutionary period, and illustrates the combination of those forces to create the particular response of New England farmers to the Whig cause in the years leading up to the war with Great Britain.
