D.W. Henderson, Builder/Designer, 1963 - San Antonio Heights. 'The Garden Penthouse, a Gold Medallion Idea Home.' When the current owners purchased the home nearly three decades ago, they were told their new home was on display at the Los Angeles County Fair and moved to its current location in 1963. Recently discovered documentation and photographs validates this narrative. Disassembled in modular sections, the house was reassembled and a garage added. Three distinct architectural styles are present upon examining this contribution to the built environment: Mid Century Modern, the California Ranch, and New Formalism. By combining all three of these distinct styles, Henderson shifts the narrative of established housing styles to one that embodies changing tastes, needs, and the emerging technology of 1960s United States. Additionally, by using tenets of New Formalist designs, Henderson pays homage to classical architecture but without superfluous ornamentation. Original character defining features of the house remain throughout much of the interior such as bathroom tile and fixtures, kitchen hardware, and overhead lighting in many of the rooms. The master suite has a private, enclosed patio, stained bamboo walls, and an inviting soft tub.
