HISTORY: Located on the Southwest of the ranch is the remains of one of the largest Pueblos in an area that scholars identify as Las Salinas province. Pueblo Colorado contains 21 apartment houses or room blocks, trash, dumps, and a large kiva. The walls were made of local limestone and red sandstone. Pueblo Colorado is Spanish for Red Village. Hundreds of people once lived here.
Like many other people, the inhabitants of Pueblo Colorado made beautiful and well-crafted ceramics for trade and daily use. By studying the changes in the styles of pottery, we know that construction began here in the early 14th century, and that the village was abandoned in the mid-16th century. Why the people left, while other settlements in Las Salinas province remained populated for another 150 years, is still unknown.
The people of Pueblo, Colorado, farmed corn and squash, hunted game, and collected wild plants for food and fiber. It is likely that they traded some of these goods for buffalo meat from plains tribes. From this location, they probably served as middlemen and social and economic interactions between the prehistoric Anasazi and Mogollon cultures to the west and the Plains cultures to the east.
