Set in the heart of the San Luis Valley ‘The Land of Cool Sunshine’ is 480 acres of lush pasture and mountain brush adjoining the Colorado Parks and Wildlife ‘Russell Lakes State Wildlife Area’. This SWA contains approximately 5,433-acres with Johnson & Kimmel and Islands Lakes and is a vast maze of spring-fed shallow lakes, wetlands, dikes and canals. It was created in 1992 by the Colorado Division of Wildlife with the goal of restoring habitat for nesting waterfowl. It is the most extensive bulrush marsh in Colorado. The San Luis Valley according to Greg Kernohan, DU’s manager of conservation programs for Colorado, ‘Is in one of the most significant waterfowl habitat complexes in the state.’ This ranch siting next to Russel Lakes State Wildlife Area, was first home to the Ute Indians and is still home to a vast display of birds and waterfowl according to ‘Colorado Birding Trail’. Artesian, stock and irrigation wells supplement the sub-water from Russell Lakes and the surrounding watered ranches. 10 miles south of Saguache Colorado you can walk from your porch for some of the best waterfowl hunting and bird watching in the San Luis Valley.
