"When I remodeled in 2007-2009 I wanted the scale of the house to match the mountains more than when I bought it. The addition, wide front circle drive, pool & spa, wandering flagstone pathways, and 1500+ sf of outdoor deck areas, made the property as a whole, more substantial and balanced. The architect had already done something of major importance in situating the house's length parallel to the mountain range length. That was brilliant. Most architects and builders would have paralleled the house with the road.
I chose paint, granite, and other materials that brought the softer colors from outside, in.....to create natural flow. I always do that with my houses. Even though the kitchen and laundry room granite was in the highest price group, I had to have it because the shades of organic greens repeated those in the mature trees right outside. And the quartz crystals in that granite, sparkle in the sunshine. Those areas took 3 granite slabs to complete.
I splurged on glass pool tile (3-4x the cost of porcelain) in turquoise, to bring water energy and color into a desert environment for balance. Splurged on the designer air jetted tub that was $4,000 before hardware or install. Spent extra on lighting. Beautiful light fixtures add depth, texture, and grace to a space. Most are on dimmers so you can create your preferred mood.
Something else I've come to appreciate and various contractors who have worked here have mentioned also, are the deep roof overhangs. The house was built with them and I followed suit because they not only look good, they're energy efficient."
