Along the banks of the Woonasquatucket River sits the residential neighborhood of Manton, a post-industrial urban area in northwest Providence where the streets are dotted with cute, older homes. The neighborhood has dining options close and just a bus ride or brief drive away, while a commute to downtown Providence is just 15 minutes away.
The main stretch of the neighborhood is Manton Avenue, where you’ll find a Stop & Shop for groceries, and dining variety from fast food restaurants to locally-owned chains. Cross the river into Johnston, where Manton Avenue turns into Greenville Avenue, and order the Heavy Burger at Levi Restaurant, which has cheese, grilled onions, mushrooms and a fried egg. Grab an apple fritter or a Boston cream at Glaze ‘n Daze Donuts, where the dough is made fresh every single day. For further options, head east on Chalkstone Avenue and find restuarants to either side of this bus-accessible street. From Machupicchu Restaurant II, serving Peruvian seafood specials, soups and breakfast. There's also pizza, Thai food, a Walgreens and several pubs on Chalkstone that are well within reach for residents.
Single-family homes in Manton range from $250,000 to $550,000, varying by the age and square footage. The neighborhood is populated with Cape Cods with dormered windows, brick and stone ranch homes with bay windows and front gables, or colonials with shuttered windows. Many of the dense streets have an urban feel, with space for manicured green lawns, but not as much for sidewalks.
Viscolosi Park is a small neighborhood green space with a playground for children, great for afternoon playdates. Residents can tee off at Triggs Memorial Golf Course, a course that is open to the public and well-regarded by many golfing publications.

Mount Pleasant High ranks as the No. 33 best high school for athletics in the district, and in 2023 the boys' soccer team took home their first Division IV championship title since the program was founded in 1970.
Manton is right next to Rhode Island College, the first public college in the state of Rhode Island. Today, the school has about 7,000 students, and its 180-acre campus includes a track, ball fields and a tennis complex.
Downtown Providence is 3 miles east of Manton by car, and the Kennedy Plaza RIPTA bus runs through Manton for residents commuting without a car. U.S. Route 44 runs north of the neighborhood and residents can take it east as far as Plymouth, Massachusetts or west into the cities and towns of Connecticut. Jeffrey Infante, a 13-year real estate agent with the Divine Group of Century 21 Limitless says, “It has an urban feel. Manton residents get a slice of city life, and it can get very busy with traffic. There are restaurants and stores all close by. It’s a walkable neighborhood that’s close to downtown.”
