Leafy tranquility in eastern Queens

In Jamaica Esates, New York City’s densely urban street grids relax into a miniature suburbia of winding roads, old English and new American style homes, and refreshing foliage. “The trees drew me here,” says Safraz Baksh, a long-time Jamaica Estates resident and real estate agent. “They give the area a tranquil feeling.” Located at the end of the F train and with Grand Central Parkway running through the middle, this neighborhood is still easy to reach. It’s surrounded by convenient shopping and kosher dining, and has a 358-acre park next door. “All the neighbors are quiet, and you have a lot of yard space,” Baksh says. “For Queens, it’s one of the most prestigious neighborhoods.”

Century-old manors and large lots for new estates

Expansive Tudors and Cape Cods, plus the occasional Mediterranean-inspired design, are signatures of the housing in Jamaica Estates. Smaller, boxy colonials are also common, and across these styles, prices range from $950,000 to $1.4 million. “Recently, people have been buying older homes, knocking them down and putting up new ones,” Baksh says. “The lot sizes are bigger here, so they can max out on the square footage.” Prices for these newer houses start around $1.8 million and can go up to $4 million. In the southern half of the neighborhood, large mid-century co-op buildings have units priced between $175,000 and $500,000, depending on size, and a limited number of condo buildings have units for $350,000 to $500,000.

Community celebrations over food and holiday traditions

Every year, the Jamaica Estates Association organizes their International Night, which invites neighbors to share their cultures with one another while enjoying food from local vendors. The Association also hosts art shows and Memorial and Veterans Day parades. Every winter, thousands of New Yorkers celebrate Hanukkah in nearby Cunningham Park with the Light Up the Night event.

The F train ends in Jamaica Estates at the 179th Street station and can bring residents into Manhattan and down to Brooklyn, making commuting straightforward, if lengthy. Several buses operate along the neighborhood’s perimeter and are convenient for reaching the Jamaica transit hub, which has more subways, the Long Island Rail Road and the AirTrain to JFK Airport.
