Suburban streets with urban amenities in southeast Queens
About 3 miles north of JFK Airport is Laurelton, a residential neighborhood where tidy rows of single- and multifamily homes are the defining feature. “It’s very suburban,” says Richard Johnson, a Laurelton resident who’s been selling real estate there since 1997. The combination of decent lot sizes — 40-feet by 100-feet on average, according to Arthur Briscoe, another agent in the area — and proximity to transit and shopping is Laurelton’s biggest draw. “The LIRR goes into the city in 20 minutes, the Belt Parkway goes to JFK Airport in 5 minutes, and Green Acres Mall is 5 minutes away.” Caribbean restaurants line Merrick Boulevard in the center of the neighborhood, and along the north end of Laurelton is a 110-acre Jewish cemetery that’s over 100 years old.

Matching Tudors, brick rowhouses and a communal village
Blocks in Laurelton often stick to one or two housing styles, so where one street may have short, boxy stick or colonial houses, the next street over could be wall-to-wall Tudors, as is the case for a few blocks on the north side. Prices for single-family homes start around $550,000 and go up to $900,000. Multifamily homes, which are mostly in the southern half, are priced between $800,000 and $1.2 million. “The south side is known as Laurelton Estates,” Johnson says. “It’s the prime area in Laurelton because the houses are very spacious.” On the east side, where Merrick Boulevard and Laurelton Parkway meet, is Laurelton Gardens, a complex of mid-century co-op buildings. These two-story brick buildings have nearly 400 units priced between $200,000 and $300,000, many with assigned off-street parking spaces or garages.
Colonial style homes are plentiful in Laurelton.

Caribbean flavors and fresh New York produce
Nearly all of Laurelton’s restaurants and local businesses are on Merrick Boulevard, which splits the neighborhood into its north and south halves. Jamaican, Haitian and other Caribbean eateries serve jerk chicken, ox tail and red snapper, and the Key Food Supermarket is right there for groceries. At the southern end of the neighborhood, near the Laurelton LIRR station, the Laurelton Farmers Market sells fresh produce on the weekends.
Pot to Plate Restaurant in Laurelton offers authentic Jamaican cuisine.

Pocket parks within, a nature-infused green space nearby
Laurelton has a few small parks just outside its boundaries, like Montbellier Park on the southwest side and Cabbell on the north, both with playgrounds. Laurelton Skate Park, on the southeast side, is just above Brookville Park, a green space with ponds and tiny rivers that run south into Jamaica Bay.
Laurelton residents can practice tricks on the ramps at the Laurelton Skat Park.
