Why Live in Olustee

Olustee is a sprawling but sparsely populated Baker County community in rural north-central Florida. Largely uninhabited, it is surrounded by the wooded landscape of the Osceola National Forest and offers a slow-paced, country lifestyle. The community was the site of Florida’s largest Civil War battle, and today it is home to Olustee Battlefield Historic State Park. Housing is concentrated in the northwest corner near Ocean Pond and U.S. Highway 90. A mix of traditional frame houses, ranch-style designs and manufactured homes occupy spacious lots on streets shaded by mature trees. Homes along Ocean Pond feature private docks. A handful of homes is scattered in wooded areas on the community’s south side. The median sales price is just over $160,000. Flooding is not a factor in this inland location, although wind damage remains a risk during hurricane season, which runs from June through November. Ocean Pond is a small lake that offers plenty of rural recreation. The highlight is Olustee Beach, a popular spot for swimming and relaxing. Fishing and kayaking are popular activities as well, and several designated campgrounds are located along the lakeshore. Trailheads in and around the
