Just five miles east of Downtown Rapid City, Rapid Valley is a slower-paced community. Homes in subdivisions have grassy lawns, and real estate prices are below the local average. Unlike the city’s west side, the community looks more like the typical South Dakotan landscape, which has allowed faster growth over time. “It’s more prairie in the east,” says Michael Frybarger, a broker with Ascend Realty. “It’s easier to build there than the hills in the west.” Almost entirely made up of residential zones and a wide swathe of untouched grassland, Rapid Valley represents a retreat for locals looking for an approachable piece of suburbia. Though the Rapid Valley neighborhood has existed since the 19th century, it continues to grow as interest in Rapid City increases. “There’s a lot of new developments along the southern edge as the city expands,” says Frybarger.
