Meet Candace Horton
Candace Horton arrived on Maui in 1975 with a one-way ticket, two bags, a bicycle, and $600 in her pocket. What began as an adventure quickly became a lifelong love affair with the island she now knows like the back of her hand. Over the decades, Maui has become her home, her community, and the foundation for countless friendships and experiences.
Candace's hospitality career began at the Ka'anapali Beach Hotel, where she worked as a cashier selling luau tickets. In 1977, she joined The Whaler as a front desk clerk, and in 1978 she was hired by Rock Resorts to help open the new Kapalua Bay Hotel, where she quickly advanced to Head Accounting Supervisor.
In 1980, Candace moved to Oahu to assist with the opening of the Honolulu Club. After a year, however, Maui called her home once again. She returned to the Valley Isle and joined the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa as a poolside cocktail server. Over the next 42 years, she became a familiar face to thousands of visitors and residents alike—spending 15 years on the pool deck before moving behind the bar, where she worked as a bartender for another 27 years until retiring in December 2022. If you've ever stayed at the Hyatt Regency Maui or enjoyed a drink at Umalu Pool Bar, chances are your paths may have crossed.
Never one to stand still, Candace earned her Hawaii Real Estate License in 1989 while continuing her career at the Hyatt. Since then, she has built a successful real estate career specializing in luxury homes, private estates, vacation properties, and residential condominiums throughout Maui.
As if two careers weren't enough, Candace also became a licensed Massage Therapist specializing in body alignment and injury rehabilitation. She often jokes, "I can make you a drink, give you a massage, and sell you a house all in one day!" That sense of humor, combined with her dedication to helping people, has been a hallmark of her success.
When her schedule allows, Candace loves to travel. Her adventures have taken her around the globe, including Bali, Thailand, Japan, China, Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand, South America, Ireland, the United Kingdom, and throughout Western and Central Europe. Along the way, she has built lasting friendships and gained a deep appreciation for different cultures and lifestyles.
An avid athlete and outdoor enthusiast, Candace has always embraced an active lifestyle. In years past, she raced outrigger canoes and competed in long-distance events, earning top placements in numerous races. She also enjoyed training for and running 10K races and marathons well into her 60s. Today, she continues to stay active through golf, yoga, swimming, sailing, and hiking.
Friends often describe Candace as the "Ever-Ready Bunny" and "Can-Do Candace" because of her boundless energy, positive attitude, and determination. Those qualities have defined both her personal and professional life.
