Monica Zappa was born and raised in Cumberland, Wisconsin, a small town in the northwestern part of the state. Growing up in an off-grid cabin, she developed a deep appreciation for self-sufficiency and the outdoors through her family’s hunting, fishing, farming, and gardening practices. These early experiences instilled in her a strong work ethic and values that continue to guide her today.
Monica earned her Bachelor of Science in Meteorology and Mass Communications from St. Cloud State University in Minnesota, followed by a Master of Science in Geography from Northern Illinois University. She also spent time studying toward a Ph.D. while working at the National Weather Center in Norman, Oklahoma. During this time, she traveled extensively whenever possible, further broadening her perspective.
In 2010, driven by a desire to reconnect with a rugged, outdoor lifestyle, Monica moved to Alaska. There, she partnered with local dog musher and fisherman Tim Osmar, launching a new chapter of adventure. Since relocating, Monica has competed in five Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Races and numerous mid-distance races across Alaska. During the summer months, she participates in the commercial salmon fishery in Cook Inlet.
Through her experiences, Monica has explored Alaska’s remote wilderness as well as its communities, developing a deep connection to the region. She has also been actively involved in conservation efforts to protect wild salmon populations and was recognized for her work in 2017 as Alaska’s Activist of the Year.
Monica’s lifelong appreciation for land and homes naturally led her to real estate. As a land specialist with Mossy Oak Properties, she brings together the strength of a nationally recognized brand with her local expertise and firsthand knowledge of rural living. She understands that buying or selling rural property requires specialized insight, integrity, and respect for the land.
